Prepare for a family protection review

Updated September 20, 2026. Start with practical questions: what do you need to protect, what can you afford and which conditions must you understand? This guide helps you prepare for a useful conversation with NC Family Protection.

Health coverage: compare more than the premium

Review your doctors, medications, deductible and costs when using care. Consider each family member. A low monthly premium does not describe the full cost of a plan.

Medicare and ACA: eligibility comes first

Medicare generally covers people age 65 and older who meet its requirements, and some younger people with qualifying conditions. Marketplace coverage and subsidies have their own rules. These are not interchangeable choices based only on price.

Review Medicare.gov and HealthCare.gov. An individual review can help clarify enrollment timing and available options.

Life insurance: identify a specific need

Consider who depends on your income, which obligations you want to cover and for how long. Ask about duration, premiums, exclusions and policy conditions. For cash-value policies, ask about charges, access to funds and guarantees versus projections.

Supplemental coverage: understand what it pays

A supplemental policy addresses specific needs under its terms. Ask when it pays, how much it pays, exclusions and waiting periods. Do not confuse it with comprehensive health insurance or assume it replaces your primary coverage.

Before your consultation

  • List current coverage and important dates.

  • Write down questions and a sustainable monthly budget.

  • Identify whether you need insurance, tax or document assistance.

  • Confirm the appropriate channel before sharing documents.
