Tax preparation: a practical document checklist
Updated September 20, 2026. Start early by organizing complete records. The right documents help your preparer review the rules that apply to your situation.
Gather your records
Bring your prior return, identification and applicable income forms such as W-2s and 1099s. Include records of business income and expenses, estimated payments, and relevant education or home office expenses. Tell your preparer about household changes and any tax notices received.
Review benefits carefully
A credit and a deduction work differently, and neither applies automatically. Education credits have eligibility, expense and income requirements. Home office deductions have specific use requirements and limits. Keep documents supporting every amount claimed.
Check before filing
Review names, identifying numbers, income, filing status and payment or refund information. Ask what is included in the preparation service and request a copy of the completed return. Confirm the deadlines and state obligations relevant to your circumstances.
Prepare for the next year
Keep a consistent recordkeeping routine and discuss changes in employment, self-employment or family circumstances before the next filing season. A refund amount is not guaranteed.
