Starting a business: prepare before you register

Updated September 20, 2026. A strong start means understanding your customers, expected costs and responsibilities. Registering an entity alone does not guarantee success, tax savings or protection of a brand.

1. Test the business idea

Identify who you serve, the problem you solve and the price customers are willing to pay. Estimate startup expenses, recurring bills and how much cash you need before sales become reliable.

2. Compare structures and tax treatment

An LLC and a corporation have different requirements. An LLC does not always have one specific federal tax classification: treatment depends on its members and any applicable election. Discuss legal liability with an attorney and tax consequences with a qualified tax professional before choosing.

3. Prepare the information and records

Organize the proposed business name, owners, addresses, activities and responsible contacts. Confirm the registrations, permits and ongoing filings that apply to your business. Keep business and personal records organized and establish a system for receipts, expenses and revenue.

4. Know the scope of assistance

Laura Cano coordinates document assistance at NC Family Protection. We confirm the requested task, documents needed, service scope and costs before proceeding. Document preparation does not replace legal advice about ownership disputes, contracts or liability.
