Tax credits and deductions: check your eligibility

Updated September 20, 2026. A deduction reduces taxable income; a credit reduces the calculated tax. Eligibility depends on the tax year, income and individual circumstances.

Lifetime Learning Credit

This credit can reduce tax by up to $2,000 per return for eligible education expenses. It is nonrefundable: the portion exceeding your tax does not create a refund. Income limits and requirements for the institution, student and expenses apply. Not every course or payment qualifies.

Keep tuition records, scholarship details and Form 1098-T when applicable. Check IRS Publication 970 for the year you are filing.

Home office deduction

Working from home alone does not qualify you. Generally, the space must be used regularly and exclusively for a qualifying business, with specific exceptions. Employees should not assume that remote-work expenses are deductible.

The simplified method allows $5 per eligible square foot, up to 300 square feet, subject to limits. The actual-expense method requires records and an allocation between business and personal use. Review IRS Topic 509 and Publication 587.
