Five things to review in your family’s health coverage

Updated September 20, 2026. Useful coverage starts with understanding how a plan works for your household. Insurance does not remove every medical cost or guarantee access to every provider.

1. Your total budget

Compare the premium with the deductible, copayments, coinsurance and applicable out-of-pocket limits. Ask which expenses count toward those limits.

2. Your doctors and hospitals

Check the plan’s current provider network. Confirm participation with the plan and provider before relying on a directory entry.

3. Your prescriptions

Review the medication list, pharmacy options and any prior authorization or other restrictions. A familiar plan name does not guarantee that every medication is covered.

4. Preventive care

Many plans cover specified preventive services without cost sharing when the required conditions are met, generally through in-network providers. Other services provided during the same visit may have costs. Check the plan’s details before the appointment.

5. Enrollment and household changes

Ask when you can enroll and how changes in household circumstances may affect eligibility or financial assistance. Supplemental insurance has its own benefits and limits and does not replace comprehensive health coverage.
